Hartlepool is a vibrant and energetic town with growing prospects. As an authority we want to make Hartlepool the best it possibly can be and want dedicated, driven and committed staff to help us achieve that.

We are looking to recruit Winter Maintenance Operatives to support Hartlepool Borough Council’s winter maintenance service between October and April on an ad-hoc basis as well as possibly on a standby/callout basis, where required. You will be driving an HGV vehicle to grit highways and other areas, according to a pre-determined route in order to enable safe passage. This role is primarily to be available to treat the highway network between the hours of 16:30 and 08:00 during week days and anytime over the weekends. The rota is normally one standby week in three (subject to change with service demands).

Applicants must hold a Full UK HGV Class C (Class 2) driving licence. It is preferable but not essential that potential candidates have an up to date Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC/DQC) card and relevant winter maintenance experience.

Training in the form of vehicle/route familiarization and a City & Guilds Winter Maintenance Operations Certificate will be given. CPC training will also be considered for candidates.

To give an indication of the commitment required, in a typical season the average number of out of hours call-outs for winter maintenance is approximately 50 (across the full season), depending on weather conditions. Typically, a driver will work a 4 to 5 hour shift when carrying out precautionary gritting, although this can vary.
